DEFINITION OF SUSTAINABILITY

The definition of sustainability may or may not be a cause of debate for the many who’ve attempted to zero in on one solid definition. Not that is hasn’t been tried in the past decades; oh, it has, but no one has yet come to an agreement on what it is precisely. Perhaps the difficulty lies because the definition of sustainability involves change and, over the years, it has evolved to cover so many aspects in this world. It may not be surprising then to find other future meanings coined by many a self-proclaimed sustainability expert. However, more than the definition of sustainability is the need to promote and support it. By agreeing on its importance as a concept and an action, everyone can come to an understanding that sustainability involves creating and maintaining a lasting quality of life.

Despite so many definitions of sustainability, there are themes that are central to the various meanings, often centered on the economy and how it is managed, on natural resources and how fast they are depleted and restored, and lastly, the society and how much of a burden or solution it is to what is sustainable. Most often, these indicators – economy, natural resources, human society – each cannot be singled out to partner with the definition of sustainability; usually, it will requires that all three are present to give more value to the meaning. Many of the definitions revolve around these terms, including phrases pertaining to humankind and nature surviving together for the present and future generations.

Even though it was mentioned that the definition of sustainability can change again over time, there is enough stress on the environment to outlast all definitions. Perhaps this is because the word came into play during the height of awareness for the diminishing of natural resources and destruction of many non-renewable materials. Globalization was just as new a term as sustainability and in those times, they were used hand in hand. With this regard, the definition of sustainability will continue to be partnered with the environmental aspect versus human life.
